Social media, workplace chat apps, email, streaming sites. Especially as the global pandemic incentivizes distancing for public health and safety, we increasingly live in virtual spaces with limited systems that we have no fundamental control over.&nbsp; Public from Nothing is an exploration of the strangeness of our virtual landscape. Using Spotify’s Discover Weekly algorithmically generated playlist, I catalogue 18 weeks of songs given to me with almost no context for my listening enjoyment. Layering each of those soundtracks in a void like the “black box” of the algorithm the music is generated from results in a strange aural landscape: a kind of public-from-nothing that sounds like an echoing mall, but only made of music assigned to me by machine learning, devoid of cultural context beyond code. Public from Nothing represents the jumping off point of our exploration of the unsettling nature of virtual space. Social distancing indoors, we’re cocooned within a context of isolation, but it also opens up possibilities for self examination. During my process of discovering what to do and how to explore this isolated year, I began to photograph the hair I put up on the wall when I showered. In the curvature of my hair, I’ve always seen forms. The way hair bends and interacts with water allows for a consistent yet evocative way of image-making when it’s held in conglomerate. In the forms of my hair on the bathroom wall, I am able to see parts of myself that I don’t have access to in my physicality. I see feminine images, swollen stomachs, nurturing bowed heads, loving embraces. From a loss, a part of me discarded on the wall, I am able to see aspects of myself, rediscover them and add them back to myself. What I don’t or can’t see in my body, I can see from my body. Through discarding my refuse hair, I acquire new validation about who I know I am.&nbsp; Age of Loss is ultimately an exploration of how we can find ways to appreciate what loss gives us and how to take that with us. This act of intentionality pushes against the systems that incentivize ignoring the value of loss. Machines may not recognize you because of the color of your skin; we may have little control over or knowledge of how our data is used; or if you try to go live on social media in a moment of distress it may go dark because of algorithmically-enforced copyright claims. New Terrain offers virtual environments, moments of meditation, to contemplate our place in virtual space. These are not solutions to our virtual grief, but instead invitations to contemplate virtual context and existence. Social media, streaming sites, online work platforms, video conferencing—our lives are mediated by virtual reality. In a pandemic where staying isolated saves lives, physical space becomes a place we visit, while cyberspace becomes where we fulfill our existence. The global pandemic has only highlighted the fragility of our world. Climate change threatens to alter our existence irreversibly, and global political destabilization and confusion are the signposts of the times. We are living in an age of loss, but loss is something we're advised not to acknowledge, and even less encouraged to openly incorporate into our lived experience. In a time of decline, we need to discover a place for loss in our lives, embrace its reality, and learn to find value in its insistence.
