Public from Nothing
Our daily lives are consumed by virtual spaces. Social media, workplace chat apps, email, streaming sites. Especially as the global pandemic incentivizes distancing for public health and safety, we increasingly live in virtual spaces with limited systems that we have no fundamental control over.
Public from Nothing is an exploration of the strangeness of our virtual landscape. Using Spotify’s Discover Weekly algorithmically generated playlist, I catalogue 18 weeks of songs given to me with almost no context for my listening enjoyment. Layering each of those soundtracks in a void like the “black box” of the algorithm the music is generated from results in a strange aural landscape: a kind of public-from-nothing that sounds like an echoing mall, but only made of music assigned to me by machine learning, devoid of cultural context beyond code.
Public from Nothing represents the jumping off point of our exploration of the unsettling nature of virtual space. Follow my journey and Explore the Void, or continue on and recieve A Vision.
